Bright and cheery meets calming and subdued for the transformation of a Torrance Memorial Medical Center med-surg unit into the Pat and Ellen Theodora Pediatric and Young Adult Pavilion.

The c|a ARCHITECTS team carefully balanced the unique care environment needs of children and young adults, developing spatial separation between the two distinct patient groups, while integrating HVAC, ceiling and lighting upgrades on the existing 16,000 square foot floor.

While bright colors and a beach-themed motif were used to infuse fun into the pediatric area, a more muted palette provides a calming environment for the young adults. Patient rooms were converted into a fun playroom and space for the TLC program on the pediatric side, while a classroom and nutrition center are designated areas to support the medical stabilization unit for eating disorders that is featured in the Young Adult Pavilion. The fresh design transforms the Hunt Cancer Center into a special care center that provides a full range of medical services for Torrance Memorial Medical Center’s pediatric and young adult patients.
